Green and blue coral with bioluminescent glow in a marine aquarium
Environmental commitment

We care for the water that gives us a living

Responsible aquarium keeping starts with respecting the ecosystems it is part of. This is our commitment to the sea of Ibiza.

Why it matters to us

Aquarium keeping that adds, not subtracts

An aquarium or a pond is a tribute to nature, and as such it must respect it. At IBIREEF we believe you can enjoy aquarium keeping while also caring for the real ecosystems it draws inspiration from.

That's why we work with responsible suppliers, encourage captive breeding over wild capture whenever possible, and use every installation to educate about aquatic life and its fragility.

Ibireef is an active part of the Blue Life Foundation, both on the technical side and in underwater work as scientific divers, and beyond it by actively taking part in talks and conventions to raise awareness of the foundation's important work.

The problem

The sea is not a dump

Every year tonnes of plastic reach our coasts, Posidonia oceanica meadows are cut down by boat anchors, gorgonians die from rising temperatures, seahorse populations decline... It seems incoherent to us to enjoy the beauty of the sea in an aquarium and turn our back on what is happening outside the glass.

That's why respect for the environment isn't an add-on at IBIREEF: it's part of how we understand this craft.

Education

Awakening respect from an early age

Our aquariums for children and classrooms don't just teach how to care for fish: they sow respect for nature. We believe that whoever learns to care for an aquarium learns to care for the sea.
